Asphalt repair questions, answered
What homeowners, landlords, churches, and small businesses around Fayetteville ask most about their driveways and lots.
General
What areas do you serve?
Fayetteville and nearby communities including Spring Lake, Hope Mills, Raeford, Stedman, Eastover, Wade, and Linden. See the service areas page for details on each town.
What does an estimate cost?
Nothing. Call or fill out the estimate form, and there’s no obligation to book the work. Photos of the damage help you get a quicker answer.
I live in on-base housing. Can you help?
Residents of on-base military family housing should contact their base housing office for maintenance. Off-base renters should call their landlord or property manager first.
What time of year is best for asphalt repair?
Warm, dry weather. Hot asphalt patching can be done much of the year in dry conditions, while sealcoating needs warmer temperatures and a dry forecast, usually late spring through early fall here.
Who fixes potholes in public streets?
Not a private contractor. Report potholes on city streets to the City of Fayetteville, and on state roads to NCDOT.
Asphalt Driveway Repair
Can you fix just part of my driveway?
Yes. Patching the damaged sections is the most common driveway job. The patch will be darker than the old asphalt at first. Sealcoating afterward evens out the color.
How long before I can drive on a patch?
Hot asphalt patches can usually take normal car traffic the same day once they cool. Avoid sharp turns and parking heavy trucks on new patches for the first few days in summer heat.
I’m a landlord. Can you repair the driveway while the tenant is living there?
Yes. Most patch jobs take a few hours. The crew can coordinate timing with your tenant so their car isn’t trapped.
Pothole Repair
Can you fix a pothole in the rain?
Not well. Hot asphalt needs a dry hole to bond, so repairs are scheduled for dry weather. If a pothole is dangerous in the meantime, a temporary cold patch can buy some time.
Is there a minimum job size?
Many crews have a minimum because of the cost of bringing out equipment and hot asphalt. If you only have one small pothole, ask whether it makes sense to fix other trouble spots in the same trip.
Who fixes potholes on my street?
If the street is public, the City of Fayetteville or NCDOT is responsible, depending on who maintains the road. If it’s a private road or your driveway, it’s up to the owner or HOA.
Crack Sealing & Filling
How often should cracks be sealed?
Check your driveway or lot every year or two and seal new cracks as they open. Catching them early keeps patching costs down.
Will the sealed cracks show?
Yes, sealed cracks show as dark lines. Sealcoating over them afterward makes the surface look more uniform.
Sealcoating
Does sealcoating fix cracks?
No. Sealcoat is a thin layer and won’t bridge an open crack. Cracks should be sealed with a crack sealant first, then the surface sealcoated.
How long before I can drive on it?
Usually about 24 hours for cars, sometimes longer in cooler or humid weather. Foot traffic is usually fine sooner.
Can you do my driveway and my neighbor’s on the same day?
Often, yes, and it can lower the cost for both of you since the crew is already set up on your street.
Parking Lot Repair
Can you repair our lot without closing it?
Usually. Repairs can be done in sections with cones and tape, and sealcoating can be split into halves so part of the lot stays open.
How often should a parking lot be sealcoated?
Every two to three years for most small lots, with crack sealing done before each sealcoat.
Asphalt Resurfacing
How long does a resurfaced driveway last?
With a sound base and regular crack sealing and sealcoating, a resurfaced driveway can last many years. How long depends mostly on the condition of the base and how it’s maintained.
Do I need a permit to resurface my driveway?
Resurfacing a private driveway in place usually doesn’t need one, but work in the street right-of-way, or changing where the driveway meets a public road, can. See our licensing and permit resources page.
